Frequently Asked Questions

We are considering making an HLF Application - can you help?

    Yes.

We've been developing HLF applications or been directly involved with HLF funded projects since the onset of the Lottery in 1995.  We have in depth experience of all stages of making successful schemes from the development of ideas, through project planning to funding applications and implementation.  Stephen wrote one of the first applications in 1995 for Quarry Bank Mill in 1995 for the Power Galleries - the return of the Mill to demonstration steam power.  His involvement with the HLF has continued ever since through York Museums, the World of Glass and participation in the January 2012 HLF Think Tank on financial resilience in museums.

You say you are a Portfolio Company - what exactly does that mean?

We provide a core set of competencies in the development and realisation of cultural projects.  Because we have been doing this for a long time, across a wide range of schemes in the UK and internationally we have a tremendous depth of experience and an unrivalled network of contacts.  So, we always look for the right fit for a project - selecting the team appropriately.

As an example - a project like the current painting exhibition at Jersey Art Gallery had a team of suppliers:

    • Flooring contractors
    • Air conditioning specilaists
    • Specialist painting movers
    • Electricians
    • Builders
    • Specialist case suppliers - Click Netherfield
    • Lighting and sound system designers and suppliers - DJ Willrich
    • Script writer
    • An audio production company - Sparklab productions in Manchester
    • A specialist drummer - Paul Patrick from the RNCM in Manchester
    • A graphics designer
    • A sound designer

SFL has a master contract with Jersey Heritage for the supply of design, development, project management and delivery services.  Under this contract SFL contracted the audio company, DJW, the sound designer and the musician directly.  We project managed the delivery of the project, while Jersey Heritage contracted the flooring, building, case supply and graphic panel production directly. We negotiated prices on behalf of the Client, Jersey Heritage and delivered the project.  This included final installation, creative direction and creating the sound and light experience.

    How do you Manage Projects?

All of our projects are based on workflow, a concept familiar in the media industry, software development and manufacturing. We are able to bring to bear a great depth of expertise and experience to create a seamless flow of activity through a project.  We do this by making sure different disciplines are integrated and there are no ugly and expensive gaps in communication and design. If we are bringing in another company to benefit the project, we select carefully and build a team ethos that is effective and gives clients value for their money.
