Site Development

Heartlands

We worked on Heartlands between 2006 and 2012 providing a range of services initially to Kerrier District Council and subsequently to Cornwall County Council.  This has included designing, part writing (with Scott James and the then design team) and editing the successful bid to the Big Lottery Fund for the Living Landmarks programme in 2007.  Stephen presented the scheme with Project Director Scott James and Councillor Malcolm Moyle to the Big Lottery Fund in the summer of 2007.   The project was awarded one of only three major grants (up to £25 million) of £22.3 million.  Sustrans Connect2 scooped the big £50 million award.

Heartlands opened to great acclaim in April 2012, has had 350,000+ visitors and has started to win awards.

Stephen acted as creative director, development director, exhibition designer and interim director.  Andrew provided project management, coordination and delivery services for the exhibition which is in the World Heritage Site Gateway buildings at Heartlands. The project:

  1. Renovated the mine buildings of the historic core
  2. Remediated contaminated land
  3. Constructed new buildings
  4. Provided new low impact energy, water and waste systems
  5. Created new commercial and residential buildings

It comprises:

  1. A new interactive multi media World Heritage Site exhibition
  2. Catering - a restaurant and functions kitchen
  3. Retail
  4. Market squares and event areas
  5. Community buildings
  6. New streetscape works for Pool village
  7. Cycle ways and new footpaths
  8. Energy generation, waste and water systems

  10. Studios
  11. Conference and corporate facilities
  12. Apartments for sale and rent

1st World War Sites

We worked for the Enterprise Zone in Herefordshire looking at the former MOD site at Rotherwas.  Built originally in 1915 to supply shells for the British Army at the Western Front it has been extensively remediated. We are working with architects Egret-West.  We looked at the heritage merits of the site, its history and how the historic element might be developed.  Supplying funding, development and business planning advice.

We've also worked for Maldon District Council on the best preserved 1st Wold War aerodrome in the Country at Stow Maries, Maldon, Essex.  Again providing  funding, development and business planning advice.

Past Projects

Sherwood Forest

We entered a competition for a Lottery funded project with Wilkinson Eyre, for a new visitor centre for Sherwood Forest.  A potentially brilliant project - here are the designs and background thinking.....

Prince of Wales Colliery, Pontefract

A project with Spawforth Architects for UK Coal. The huge slag heap contained valuable coal tailings and UK Coal wanted a plan for it post recovery of the coal....

Rapid City

Rapid City - a £300 million development for the National Museum of Science and Industry - for the York site.  A mixed use cultural and commercial development.

Askern - Masterplan

Askern is a small former coal town, north of Doncaster. A once attractive inland spa with a lake - a resort serving the manufacturing centres of Yorkshire.
